List Building To Success
In the last couple of weeks I have been concentrating my efforts on list building and developing a solid relationship with my subscribers, i have seen many of my peers in this industry shoot passed me in terms of list size by doing adswaps on a daily or twice daily basis,
The Benefit for them is they grow a list quite fast, a lot of them seem so concentrated on doing this that they never stop to think of why they have a list, (to make money), I know people with lists of 2000+ and are unable to sell anything to the list or just plain dont know how, all because they were only ever taught how to build the list, not use it.
It seems very common for marketers to avoid building a solid relationship with the list, be it being lazy or not understanding why its necessary, a lot of them claim they don’t know how or don’t have time, for me i sat down one evening and wrote 7 emails one after another, it took 2 hours and then loaded it in my autoresponder … so what do i have a result? was it necessary or just a waste of time?
I have set up two lists as an experiment, 1 list with 800 subscribers and one with 400, building a solid relationship with the list of 400 people and for the list of 800 people I have been mailing twice daily selling information products..
Continueing at this pace of over one month what are the results? was it silly of me to build a relationship? was it a waste of time?

Very interesting “split test.”
I have been trying to mix it up a bit for my list because EVERYBODY complains about endless offers – whether they are free or not.
I’m sure that some people are just drugged by the word free and they would download a matchbox full of termites if it was possible and it was FREE!

The stats definitely show what you did with your smaller list paid off. What isn’t clear from this post is what methods you used to build the relationship. Care to share?
Great post – there are basically 2 business models in this game – Ad Swapping to drive traffic and sell a few OTOs, or building a solid relationship through sound email marketing.
I have a list of 2000 which is what I will be doing no more than 1 swap per week from now on – i am setting up another offer which I will start from 0 and swap daily with a large OTO.
The I will have my own proof of the way to go.

My method in particular was writing a series of follow up messages, loaded into the autoresponder, these are simply introducing myself, telling them about me and what I do, I offer help and guidance in anyway possible,

Thanks for the feedback, I like to provide value to my list, at least once a week give them something that they may like, a no strings no opt in required offer, give help and guidance, if you send too many freebies to the list they will never be converted into buyers so we cant be afraid to sell to them

I like the way you think Colm. I’ve been doing adswaps as well to build my list and find that if the word free is not in the subject line the open rates drop. That used to worry me but no longer. The ones that open the non free emails are the subscribers that are more likely to become customers. It is a fine line when trying to build a list while at the same time building a relationship. I’m impressed with the open rates for the non swap list you have. Thanks for sharing your findings

I’ll have to try this out for myself, an open rate of 21% is really exciting results.
I try to do this with my whole list but I guess it is much harder.
I think I’ll practice on a smaller portion of my list first then hopefully I’ll be able to do the same with my whole list
Hi Colm – I will be sharing your post with my contacts. I totally believe in ‘building at list’ and not just getting 200,000 contacts! You hit the nail on the head, it have to have a good relationship with your contacts. They will stay longer, usually will buy, and when you ask them, they generally will refer others to you as well.
